Well, I have a Kindle 3 on order. Actually, the spouse ordered for me as a birthday gift.

"You might call it Amazon's iPad response ... The Kindle 3 is ingeniously designed to be everything the iPad will never be: small, light and inexpensive."

As far as I know the whispernet is currently free, no?
As I read it, yes, WhisperNet is free at least in the USA. However, there's mention of "roaming charges" related to WhisperNet outside of a home network or if downloading certain files. Hrm.

The idea is to give users easy access to the Amazon eBook library which means more sales for Amazon. I do not know how much general web-surfing through WhisperNet can be done without incurring charges.

I was researching it a bit some time ago and apparently the Kindle 1 had an experimental browser that could be used to log into e-mail accounts. I don't recall reading anything about charges. There are charges if you send a file for conversion through their system; but I saw nothing about browsing charges.

I didn't even know a Kindle 3 came out. I wonder if the original has gone down in price any?

I think graphic intensive sites may work, but look very bad. As long as my wife can check her email, and facebook, it will meet our needs.

If this video is any indication, the new Kindle 3 "Web Kit" based web browser is quite usable, at least compared to the previous Kindle 2 browser.

That G10 looks pretty nice. My biggest gripe about the iPad (aside from the price) is that the productivity 'apps' aren't really compatible with anything, so I've heard so far. The G10 says it's ok with pdf, doc, xls,... and that would be nice to be able to at least attempt to be productive on it as well.

I consider devices like the iPhone, iPad and Kindle to be "consumer" data devices.

That's not to say a "professional" wouldn't use one.

A professional just wouldn't PRODUCE anything with one.

I could take notes with a Kindle or iPad but I wouldn't write a thesis on one.

Kindle fits with one of my missions in work and home life: open data.

A library can burn down, takes up space and is only in one location.
A digital library is pervasive.

Bought my wife a K3 for her birthday and it arrived this morning. She has it charging now. Visually, it is a slick little device. The wifey likes it so far.
