I recently started playing 'Space Agency', an iPad app that looks to be inspired by KSP. Really addictive. I just bought KSP to check it out.

I would and it has very little to do with money but I feel at this point that they are essentially charging money for a demo. It's nowhere near a finished product and I have actually bought previous versions but for some reason they feel that if you bought a version before a certain point you're not entitled to upgrades and must pay again to get this latest version with all the updates and that doesn't personally sit well with me. With that said when it's a finished product with the kinks worked out I have 0 problems buying it.

Do you play and enjoy the current version? If so, then pay up and support the devs. If you don't want to pay, then don't play it.

"I want to play it, but it isn't worth what they're asking for" is a pathetic cop out of an excuse, and is insulting to people working in the development industry. I don't walk into your place of business, make use of your services, and then say "while it is really nice, I don't feel like paying... FU I'll keep using it anyway."

Don't like their product? Find someone else and support them. Jerks pirating software is why the rest of us have to put up with annoying DRM or pass on larger games. It makes it many times harder to get funding as investors freak out over piracy, and is in general a headache for anyone working in the industry.

It's an early access game. Not finished but playable. I see it as a sort of payed beta testing.

Kerbal Space Program Blog, Expansions, DLC and the future of KSP

So given that this was a point of confusion, and that we believe that no matter what, a promise is a promise, we are including Expansions in what you can expect to get for free if you have already bought the game. Also, for those considering purchasing the game, we will maintain this promise for all purchases made until the end of this month (April, 2013).
At a 50% price discount you get early access to the game, the FULL game when completed, and whatever updates / expansions that come afterward for free. Of course the offer is already over for those who haven't purchased it yet.

I think those who bought it early in development got a pretty good deal.

As I already stated before I bought the game a couple years ago when it was barely out of alpha on the premise that I would get the full game when it was finally released. Given that I paid on that premise it is a complete crock of that simply because I bought an older version way back when that the devs see fit to reneg on their promise to the early adopters and try and force us to pay again. F that! I paid for it already and if I have to pirate it at this stage I damn well will. My pirating it now has 0 to do with not wanting to pay them or not wanting to support the game or the industry. In truth be known I've probably spent well over $1000 on steam alone. So don't get on your soapbox with me about piracy

Keep at it. Orbits really aren't that hard to get the hang of once you learn to get into one. Big key is learning how and when to make your rolls and transition into orbit from launch. Fly by your nav ball and the map, not the ship itself.

And Falcon16, I bought it ages ago as well, and have never been asked to pay more money for anything. Last I heard they were even expanding what previous backers (up til April 2013) are getting by throwing in possible future expansion packs that haven't even been announced yet.

My job has been on the line several times in the past due to software piracy rates. We've had multiple clients pull out of their contracts when their finances were yanked by idiots in suits panicing over apparent piracy rates and fearing for their profit margins. So yeah, more than a little personal when people encourage or condone piracy. (I really don't care if someone does it, just as long as they shut up about it, don't publicly condone it, and don't encourage others to do it.)

weird I dunno then what happened on my end. I'm not normally a piracy kind of guy. Only time I ever bother personally is if I'm just above required spec for a game and want to see if it'll run decently. If it does I've no problems going out and buying it if it doesn't well then I uninstall it and I wouldn't have bought it anyways so no harm no foul there as I see it. I was not trying to say that I blanket condone it as I do truly believe that good devs deserve to get paid for their work but like I said I'm not sure what happened in my case but them basically saying oh your copy is too old to properly update or validate that you actually bought it please pay again was just a slap in the face. So I did it as more of a you for not honoring the original agreement that I purchased on.

At the end of the day thought regardless of how I feel right now your post has given me enough to think about that I decided to go and pony up again regardless of how I feel somewhat slighted as even if overall it's cost me about $35 over the last couple years it's well worth it.

Thank you for remaining calm and rational in your reply as well I do appreciate that. My post was not meant to call you out or condone piracy I was simply stating why I in this instance chose that route and I hope that with me telling you a bit about how much I actually spend on games that you would see that I do truly support the software industry and good devs.

Disclosure: I'm also a shade tree Android dev for a few clients here in town.

you're easier to steer than your spacecraft

also the demo on steam is free, but since you paid, it probably won't satisfy you
