Alpha test? LOL

Everyone's gotta be different these days huh? I don't have a machine that can play it unfortunately but I would love to play it. I've been looking forward to it for awhile.

They mine data from betas. They are typically multiplayer so that server load information can be taken. You will notice in many games that the beta differs greatly from the final game (halo 3 and reach are good examples and in both the beta gameplay was, imo, superior to the final gameplay)

Also, Moose, I hate you. J/k you lucky chump.

Bad Company 2's Beta was rather similar to final gameplay though. Hopefully BF3 has a similar working, because from the Alpha footage on youtube, its shaping up to be very nice.

"Alpha Testing" is the 'internal' testing of initial software development. This is the developers and internal/contracted testers running tests on the various parts of the software to ensure it functions as expected.

Alpha Testing is small scale teams using the software and having direct feedback between the software production. Alpha testing is where you work out fine details. "This blue isn't blue enough", "He walks too fast", "This level is too hard.", "This weapon doesn't feel right.".

"Beta Testing" is a release to a wider group of external testers. It is "Here you go, play with that, tell us what you think."

Beta Testing is larger scale, and often fairly black-box communications. You can provide feedback to the devs, but don't expect a reply. By the Beta Testing stage devs are looking for critical issues (Crashes, major glitches, unexpected exploits that break the game.) and aren't likely to listen to issues to minor complaints like weapon balance without a large portion of their testing base moving in the same direction on the issue.

So, if you got invited to an "Alpha Test", and aren't an employee/close friend of the developer, then you're not in an Alpha Test. You're in a Marketing Campaign.

(PS, Professional testing of games sucks. Long hours, low wage, and often very bad games of types you don't like that are full of bugs. Oh, and you have to play the same game over, and over, and over, and over again.)

The PC version of the game, according to DICE, could see 64-player games, whereas consoles will be limited to 24—presumably because consoles would be unable to process large network traffic. What we’re seeing is an inevitable side effect of the manufacturers’ choice to extend the lifespan of this console generation. The three main consoles have remained technologically stationary, while PC hardware is improving exponentially.

I can't wait for the next generation of consoles...they're holding everything back including PC games right now.

This is the server testing/back end stress testing phase to prepare for the multiplayer beta. We have direct communication with the developer in order to critique gameplay and server issues.
