Home-Made Reflector

I was noticing how my portraits had very harsh shadows, as well as not a good balance of contrast a quite often. I figured a reflector would be a good option to bring out a more evenly exposed face. Since I didn't want to spend any cash trying this out-

I built a cheap reflector from some poster board, a sheet of aluminum foil, and a piece of cardboard.

Surprisingly, it works great with reflecting light back up. I had my "model" hold the reflector facing her so that I could get some light bouncing up into her face. Here are the results, first without the reflection and second with the reflection.

I have found that the reflector brings out a more even exposure on the face, and I'm looking forward to shooting with it some more. I'm pleased with the results.

Thought I'd share,

Josh

On a side note, you perfected the JJ Abrams lens/solar flare look. Other than that I can't tell a difference.

My wife and I have used the foldable things they make for you to put in your car windshield to keep the sun off the seats as reflectors. I believe it worked pretty well, and you can get them for a couple of bucks. The one we have has a silver side, but it is very wrinkely, so i figured it was sort of self diffusing.

Fill plus use of the reflecctor to overpower the sun light without losing the background.
