Hard drive issues

Been having these a lot lateley..

Came into work to find my station non-responsive. Long story short, secondary hard drive was getting a "The device has a bad block of memory, which Windows attempted to read. The data might be missing or corrupted." error.

Something I can fix by swapping drive controllers and using data recovery software to get the data back, or is this thing just toast. No click of death, just seems to keep reading the same section of the disk over and over.

(Not a lot of data on there except all the drivers and utitlities for the machines in the office.)

what brand of hard drive it it? at work when had a bad CASE of Maxtors, i personally had to replace at least ten of them. i though maybe it was just a fluke that somebody had dropped the box at some point, but then i bought a brand new Maxtor and it went out within a month. i thought Western Digital was supposed to be the bad one...
if it is just one bad block your SMART feature should relocate that data somewhere else on the drive and mark that block as bad, if you keep getting bad blocks it might be the drive going bad. i would backup anything you need off of it and let it run a surface test over night and see what that comes up with

That sure sounds like a dying drive. If you need to recover the data, I've got a bunch of file recovery utilities that I can send you. If it's just drivers and such, recovery probably isn't worth your time other than doing a basic chkdsk with a fix.

Its also got my personal graphics files on it, along with some photos. The photos, are backed up at home. Everything else... nope.

I have some utilities, but windows wont even reconise the thing. Not like I can do a surface scan on it, as it freezes up anything that tries to touch it.

May have another samsung drive around here of the same model though.

Does Windows recognize that there is a drive D (or whatever) attached? Azzy, PM me your email address, I thought I had it but I don't. I'll send you utility that has saved my butt a few times.

Matt
