Activision put out a pair of Heavy Gear games after the original Mechwarrior series on PC went on its first hiatus, and the second one was very good.
Never played the tabletop version, but I did pick up some techincal readouts and was amazed at how much creativity and thought went into the 'mech designs and their faux backstories.
I picked 'em both up for cheap not that long ago off of Amazon, not bad games for the time they came out. Never got into any of the books, but the PC games were pretty well made.

I got into it a bit too, I actually like it a lot, but it never really caught on the same way unfortunately. I blame the styling-it wasn't quite anime and not quite western either.

It's still around, too, a new edition is supposed to be coming...eventually.

I'm already practicing my hit and run tactics in MW4. Running wave mode with 1 raven set up with 1 large clan laser, 1 medium laser and 1 small laser versus a medium lance headed by a heavy in urban areas. I figure I can work my way up to areas with longer ranges of engagement slowly. I can take the atlas 1 on 1 if I focus either on leg shots early on or go straight for center torso and circle of death at full throttle.

Removing an AC20 doesn't change the outward appearance of the Hunchback at all.

There is a swayback variation of the hunchback that turns into a total laser boat though.

I remember when I was playing this with miniatures;
If it stays true to form
best 6-9 mech is a 60ton
best 5-8 mech is 75ton
best 4-6 mech is 95 ton
best 3-5 mech is 100 ton

You must have been playing the clans then, my old mechs weren't that fast. My fastest at 45 tons and 6-9 was the phoenix hawk, who paid a high price for all that mobility. There were the classic unseen trio of 55 tonners that were mobile death machines at 5-8, and then the heavies in the 60-75 ton range were compelled to do 4-6 if they didn't want to get left behind. Even that much mobility came at a armor disadvantage...
