Lightroom alternative suggestions

Currently i'm trying to get a copy of lightroom, Trying to avoid the path of piracy and being a "bad person" i'd like to get a legit copy of lightroom from a retailer, since the price tag is something around 300 bucks and the only college friend i have i'm having trouble getting him off his *** to buy a student copy for me for the 80 bucks.

So my question is, are there any cheaper/free alternatives to use that work well enough to start with?

Right now i'm downloading lightroom 4 beta to try out and mess around with, but that's going to expire at the end of the month when it leaves beta.

So any suggestions? Oh and also it has to be capable of editing .raw files. The photoshop 2 that i have won't work with them.

Yeah, getting a friend to buy you a 'student' copy really isn't much better than just downloading it. They're both copyright and TOS violations.

But it is a great piece of software. Picassa always wanted to glitch out with the RAWs produced by my Rebel T3, and I never got around to sorting it out.

There is also GIMP. It is free, but I don't know RAW.. I downloaded it but removed it. Found it to be a bit clunky.

I think lr4 will be out this year. Might want to search that a bit in case its possible for you to wait for that.

I have the official lightroom 3 classroom in a book, it's $50 at the bookstore, probably cheaper on amazon. Get that to learn how to use lr. Or try adobe.tv or something like that.
