Well the Tamron 70-300 VC IMO destroys the Canon 70-300 IS (non L).
I guess my biggest gripe with Canon is that if I want a good quality prime for a reasonably cost I need to look at an L. No saying that the 85 1.8 and 100 f2/f2.8 macro are stellar lenses. But the 28 1.8 seems to be soft and suffer from flare along with the 50 1.4 which has well know issues. The 50 1.8 is well hit or miss and cheap, but can turn some great pictures out.
