So I am going to build a darkroom.

The wife has her heart set on a darkroom. I asked her if she would actually use it if I built it, and she told me "yep" before I told her how much it would cost. I have a friend who will give me an enlarger and equipment. All I need to do is build the room, ventilate, sink, and bench.

I am thinking about building the sink as new ones cost a few hundred dollars. What do you guys think? I shoot digital but film would be fun every once and a while.

I'm guessing this will go in an undeveloped basement?

If so, you could always use blackout fabric for the walls and have a zippered door. Add that to a cheap plastic laundry sink and a folding table and you're done. You can always build something more permanent if it's getting a lot of use.

I think I may do something semi permanent. With the need to put in a sink and pump under it to get the water up I will put up some walls and use some blankets for the entry doors.

Oh good, you can develop film for me instead of CVS! That way you can slowly recoup the costs of building your own.

Step One: Find basement with no windows

Step Two: Paint walls black

Step Three: Turn off light.

Don't skimp with your safety details, and keep in mind all the fun stuff like chemical storage and containment.

Also, if possible, get either actual versions of your gear or something that functions as a decent mock up, and go through series of light runs in a space the size you're planning to use. Run through all the motions of the space many times in the setup you are thinking of using, and make sure it actually works. Really sucks working in a darkroom with a bad layout. Low light conditions are a great breeding ground for accidents.

Good luck with the project.
