Building a laptop is significantly more expensive and difficult than building a tower pc. If the price point is 1000+bucks, Dell's various offerings (xps, alienware) can't be topped by anyone, especially if you call in to order. In the interest of full disclosure. Sager and Clevo offer comparable systems to the Alienware line, but don't have the same level of support and flair.

Get a cheap notebook and put good money into a desktop. I got an expensive laptop in 2009 and its drying pretty quick now.

In all honesty, I think this is what I am settling with. Once I have my own place (should be less than a month) I am going to do this. My macbook still works (though the screen is rather.... cracked) and I will use it on the ship until it finally dies.

As for a desktop, I will probably have a build thread up soon enough for advice. I know nothing but am looking forward to learning and piecing it together.
