I'm thinking I'll pick one of these up today to see what it's all about.

I have a 50 f/1.8 II, and mine doesn't rattle. I can hear a bit of play from the focus ring if I shake it hard enough, but nothing I would call a rattle.

To me the build quality is adequate. I don't expect it to fall apart anytime soon, and it should last me long enough that I will have picked up most of the other lenses I want in my collection before I replace it with the 1.4 or a used L series.

But I really hope that will be the last non-USM lens I ever find myself buying. After I used one, the other lenses just didn't seem to work as well.

I bought one, but I really don't like the manual focus. It's just uncomfortable to use and too touchy.

I like the image quality though...

Cheap feeling yes. Cheapest lens Canon sells new yes. Crapass MF ring yes.

I really didn't like mine, the MF ring really bothered me and the focal length using a crop body made it useless for most of my uses. However, I had zero complaints about the IQ, pretty sweet really.
