I found some Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS II f/4-5.6 for $160+ on eBay, so I'll definitely consider that option as well.

My cousin's wife has a 55-250. We swapped for a photoshoot we partnered on and I was pleased with the overal performance of it.

IIRC, I shot part of this album with the 55-250 and I THINK this shot was one of those.

Overall a nice all around lens. Sharp where it needs to be sharp, soft where it needs to be soft. Decent contrast and color with pretty solid CA performance.

thumbs if you read that in his voice. lol

can only agree with that statement although getting a canon version of this lens is literally a step better than cheap copies like quantaray.

I used to shoot a 70-300 quantaray. My god, that was a piece of crap. About as sharp as a jar of mayonaise.

So I am seeing 55-200mm and 55-250mm. I had no idea there was a 55-200 until I saw one for sale on CL. Should I even consider the 55-200, or go for the 55-250?

hmm did not know either

did some reading and found this

Quote:
The Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM Lens is very light and compact, focuses fast, has a good focal length range and is inexpensive.

There is a Canon Lens Chart floating around that lists the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM Lens as weighing 3.4 lbs. I can assure you that a scale would require many of them to reach this weight. This is a very light telephoto zoom lens.

What you don't get with this lens is good build quality. The Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM Lens has a very plastic-like feel to it. No distance window is provided. A plastic mount seals the low-end build quality rating.

One of my favorite qualities of the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM Lens is its USM AF (Autofocus). It is fast and quiet. Well, at least the motor is quiet. The lens elements make a "thunk" sound as they make a poorly-damped stop in their focused position.

Although it has USM AF (Ultrasonic Motor autofocusing), the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM Lens does not include FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing. In fact, the 55-200 does not even include a manual focus ring. Manual focusing is accomplished by turning the extending portion of the lens barrel after switching the lens to manual focus. It works, but is not very nice - very cheap. To make matters worse, the 55-200 extends during focusing. If you do not have the lens retracted when it is removed from the camera, you must switch to MF and twist the end of the lens barrel to fully retract it. Of course, you could just leave it as it is.

I like manual focus rings......

I think since reading this review and a few others the 55-250mm would be better for you for the price for sure!
