Nintendo DS Homebrew

I'm thinking of picking up a Nintendo DS after reading about the booming homebrew scene for it. Apparently you can run everything from Quake to SNES to LucasArts SCUMM games on it with the proper flashing and such.

Anyone into this? I'm up to my neck in information and I'm not really sure where to begin.

Another option is the GP2X, linux based handheld. My wife has one, its run GL Quake and a few other games, has an NES emulator and a Gameboy advance emulator.

That GP2X is tempting, but I think the touch feature is what sells me on the DS, even over the PSP.

As for videos...just search on youtube!

DS is totally worth it. Homebrew applications are coming along nicely, although I've yet to get ScummVM (LucasArts emulator) working on it properly. But it's got some fantastic mainstream games as well.

However, if emulation is really your target, I'd probably consider a high end palm or Pocket PC with a nice, big (comparatively) screen, because I've got to tell you, the text is very difficult to read on a regular handheld, but nigh impossible on the DS, and any game with small characters or moving bits on the screen is guaranteed to give you a screaming headache. The trade is better controls on the DS. Tough call, I guess.

Well...I'm scoring one from craigslist tonight after work! $100 CAD with a Supercard, 1 gig SD charger etc. Only catch is it has a slightly wonky hinge, which seems to be par for the course with many NDSes.

Then there are other, much darker things that can be done to a DS. It all matters on your feelings of piracy.

Nintendo DS and DS Lite Backup Units and accessories let you play DS emulators, roms and downloaded games / ModChipStore.com
The first 2 items are of interest, with these you can download any DS game and put it on a MicroSD card and play it using this device...the kicker is you can store many games on one 2GB MiroSD card...I haven't done this but I have a friend who has and it works fine for him.

::: Disclaimer::: I advocate personal choice on all matters. If, IF you do pirate any games that's your choice and I have no idea where the games can be found on the web.

My feelings on piracy...

AVAST!

(Of course I'd never use a rom for a game I didn't own... )

The "Supercard" that I'm getting with this package does what that M3 card does.

You can rom it up big time on PSP's as well..and they have a much better screen.

That said. I am a mario man and have owned a ds since day one.

I tried a PSP and the controls drove me nuts. I absolutely can't stand thumb joysticks. I agree about the screen, but the DS is backwards user compatible. The stylus doesn't hurt either!

The PSP is definitely better for playing 3D roms, but I grew up with NES, Genesis and SNES and never really liked N64 or any of the Sony platforms.
