Apple tv - what your opinion on it?

I have a 46'' hdtv that was used as computer screen but I can live without it there since I tend to use more my 21 1/2''.

I currently have no cable/satellite and I was wondering if a apple tv could fill the gap or is it mostly buy/rent only and no tv at all? There a few shows I started to like but I dont know if I will be able to watch them.

I dont want to pay 30$+/months to watch 5-6 channel only.

What are the alternative?

If you don't mind itunes then the AppleTV can be a very handy device. We use ours primarily for watching Netflix, and streaming content from iTunes. If you get one I would suggest getting Handbrake, it's a free video converter that has presets for the AppleTV. Generally after downloading a video it's a 2-3 click process to have it converted and added to iTunes.

One bonus of the Apple TV is the ability to mirror wirelessly from an iPad 2/3 and iPhone 4/4S and newer Mac computers running the newest OS (my 2 year old MBP cannot mirror).

One thing I really don't like is the remote control. It feels sluggish and you have to really be pointing it right at the front of the Apple TV.

My question, when did it become so damn difficult to even buy a tv and turn it on? Anyone else remember simply plugging it in, turning it on, and it worked? I bought a 46" a couple year ago and had to do a ton of settings, after a month of it burning in I had to have a guy come out and "tune" the color, what the hell? Sure it looks nice, but the old TVs did too. Only reason I have satelite right now was for my mother in law when she was visiting. I can do with out all of that. Nothing on regular TV worth watching anymore. I have netflix, its all I need. I listen to talk radio and have the net for news. And another thing, that new digital tv service that the government made everyone go to sucks. Analog was much better. Come to think of it, analog was better in alot of things. I F-ing hate this time period.

If your already in the apple ecosystem the AppleTV is excellent. Even if your not its a pretty good buy but there are several other players in the space, ie Roku, Xbox360/consoles.

I have had mine since the 2nd gen were announced and its been awesome, but then I can stream my laptop, ipad or iphone to the screen. Makes it extremely handy.

I just picked it up on the weekend, I'm loving it so far
But I already have an Imac, ipad and iphone
so its very easy to use, the Remote app is one of my favorites right now
the control is so easy, using the included remote feels weird would rather use my phone

only problem I am having right now is that my Iphone mirrored is fine, the ipad mirrored is fine but the Imac mirrored its only taking up 1/4 of my screen on my Tv
any one know what the issue is?

In your display settings uncheck overscan protection and your iMac should fill the screen.
