Ipod classic repair?

Ok I tried to fix an Iphone, once....ONCE. That didnt work so well, so I am asking if anyone knows of an Ipod repair guy who is reasonable, I have a 20gb classic and I think the HD is bad, and that costs about as much as a refurb unit with higher capacity. Or should I just sell it for parts and get another Ipod? What would a Classic 20gb unit go for parts?

Thanks,
Shane-O

Take it to the Apple store in town, and let them tell you what it would cost to repair. They may give you a better price. I've seen them do it with iPhones, so it's worth a shot.

There's an FAQ and price list for bench fees for the Apple store. I found it when searching for costs to repair my iPod and wish I had kept the link as a favorite. As I recall, Apple's fees were over $100 to look at my iPod Classic. The fee and the fact I'd have to go to an Apple store was enough for me to forego the repair at this time.

Don't bother getting Apple to repair anything if it is outside warranty, the parts cost they charge (when you can find OEM for a fraction of what they ask) is insane.

Shane, I did the following repair on my Ipod classic 4th gen (I think from 2005 or 2006) last year or the year before and it's still working today.
The walk through is pretty easy and suggests which parts to get. You end up switching the disk hard drive out for a CF memory card. I think mine went from 20 gigs down to 12 but it works perfectly and uses less battery power and doesn't heat up anymore.

Convert your 4th Gen iPod to use Flash Memory

Hope that helps or gives you an idea of possibilities. I still use this ipod every day.

Thanks Dan! I think I will try this, and upgrade the battery at the same time.

After reading Dan's link, I am going to do a battery on mine and see if it fixes it. If it doesnt I will do the CF swap. Ordered a 1300mah battery pack with plastic tools from Ebay. Any advice on opening the case?

I have used razors and exactors. Both worked, I think a standard razor blade works the best through because of the longer surface.

Work your way all around the case little by little.

I have dings the sides of my iphones opening them up but don't think the ipod is as difficult to open. Mine are in cases so I don't notice it. Good luck Shane!

Use a guitar pick and keep working around the case slowly
