True...ice is not something I've had to deal with much. Indoors, yes. Weird white surface under green lights, no.

I did some hockey last year. Decent local arena.

Shot in manual. The ice is like one giant reflector and exposure values are pretty consistant. I think I was 1/1250, ISO3200, f2 - 2.8. (200mm or 400mm). Hocky is FAST, so you need high shutter speeds. 1/500 is probalby the minimum that would get you by @ 200mm. And you want 200mm, to be able to isolate players. "Portrait's on ice" is how the guy who taught me explained it.

Oh, and the red tint you see on the ice in some pictures is the cycling of the lights. You don't get it at a professional arena, but you'll get it everywhere else. Just have to accept it.

Also, beware of the rinks rules for photography. I was just at an arena yesterday and second rule for it was no lenses over 50 mm..... Of course that rule is incredibly general and 50 mm on one type of body can be very different on another OHL game? Can't see anybody harassing you though.

Lens, whatever is your longest, fastest lens. I won't hesitant to borrow the 2.8 from your friend. Bloody fun to use those

Jealous... OHL is good hockey to watch. Hockey strikes suck

well ended up going to to the game and they made an announcement that if you hadn't registered your camera with the management prior to the game it would be confiscated by security. Thankfully my friend who had the tickets even told me not to bother bringing my camera. So unfortunately no shots from the game . I think the rules are bunk personally but whatcha gonna do.
