35mm RangeFinder

Anyone own/shoot with one? I've been looking around at buying one sometime in the near future to take around and travel with. The Yashica Electro 35 looks great, I shoot with a yashica right now as my main film camera and I'm pleased.

Thoughts?

I shoot an M3, and couldn't be happier!

Just be aware that the Electro 35 is a massive camera considering it doesn't have a mirror. It's as big as an SLR.

If you are wanting something small, and on the cheap, look for an Olympus 35RC. Don't look for an M3 until you are sure that you are man enough to shoot film, LOL!

After looking into the Electro 35 I don't really think it's what I'm looking for. Uses a weird battery and what not.

I just want something that I can grab and go. No lenses to fidget with or batteries to charge every time I shoot. I love my Yashica with my 50mm lens, amazing all around camera. It's just REALLY bad with batteries, that I have to drive to the camera shop to buy for $8 a pop, and it's heavier than my 7D.

Broch, I'd LOVE an M3, time will tell if I go for one

I've looked at rangefinder cameras for a while and I find the only one that really draws my interest is the Leica and the Contax are nice too. Maybe if I can find a Contax with a 50mm 1.8 I'd jump on it though I've also debated as russc suggested just running my ME Super and getting the 40mm pancake lens for it as that makes the tightest film setup ever

Canonets are really nice, especially the 1.9 and 1.7 GL3´s They´re not the lightest but not the heaviest either.

If you want something to just grab and shoot, Olympus trip 35 fits the bill. Not a rangefinder but zone focus, but takes brilliant pics and is totally ndependent of batteries.

I use a canonet QL17Giii and it's a great little camera.

Be aware that working around mercury batteries will hamper your grab and go idea. The replacement zinc air batteries will fluctuate in voltage and have a short life span which effects your meter. There are some other replacement options and adapters but they tend to be expensive.

I'd look for a camera that can function manually without a meter and then get a good hand held meter. Also avoid anything with a selenium cell meter unless you can test it out first.

Some cameras to consider would be :
canonet, work well in manual.
olympus XA (not manual but uses modern batteries and extremely small)
The FSU leica copies, not small but have nice lenses and are cheap.

If you're just looking for travel snaps also consider some zone focus cameras like the XA2, they're very cheap and the speed of operation is incredibly handy.

There are also a large number of tiny SLRs like the OM series and the smaller pentax's. My Konica TC is only a very tiny bit larger than my QL17 but the ergonomics are much better and it only set me back 30 dollars.

I've used a M3, now on M5. Can't get much better than that.

I've switched a large part of my Camera kit to leica over the last few months. Absolutely love it.

I had used older rangefinders before (electro 35 being one of them), and never really liked them. Then I borrowed a friends M6 and fell in love.
