DVD ripping program

I have a new terabyte hard drive and an older computer hooked to the TV. I would like to rip my collection of DVDs and place them on the hard drive so that I can just call them up to watch rather than having to insert the different DVDs. This would also let me set the disks aside to avoid being scratched.
Are there any good programs that will allow me to rip most of the movies? Preferably shareware.

Thank you
Big Jim
