The Kindness of Strangers

A little over a week ago, I listed a gun for trade on my local gun forum and listed Nikon lenses as one of the things I was interested in. I got a few nibbles and then a guy told me he had a Nikon at home with a few lenses, but it was an older film camera. When he got home he told me he had an N75 w/ some Sigma lenses. I thanked him for the offer but declined explaining that it really wasn't what I was needing.

Shortly there after I made a deal with another member to meet the next day, then went to eat some crab legs. When I got done and cleaned up, I noticed I had a message form the guy with the camera stuff. He said he would pay full cash asking price plus an extra $20 if I could meet him that night. I sent a response saying that I had already struck a deal with another member and while I certainly appreciated his generosity in offering more, I had made a deal and I stuck to them. Once I gave someone my word, that was it for me. He replied saying that he totally understood appreciated that I had that kind of integrity.

The next morning I woke up to another message. The individual with the camera equipment was so refreshed by my integrity that he wanted to send me the camera equipment and he would pay shipping. I insured him that it was not neccessary and that I greatly appreciated the offer. He insisted and today a package showed up containing:
  • A Nikon N75 Body
  • A Sigma 28-90 3.5/5.6 Asph Macro
  • A 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO D Macro
  • A 58mm & 55mm Skylight Filter
  • A 58mm Circular Polarizer
  • 2 rolls of Kodak Professional 100 Tmax B&W Film
  • 1 roll of Kodak Professional 400 Tmax B&W Film

A great reward for being an honorable guy and eating crab legs.... That was very nice of him. What do you think you will be doing with it? Donate it to a photography class as a loaner? I have done that about 10 times when all I want out of a package is one lens or am given camera gear. My community college has a crap load of loaner cameras now. Good for you and I am happy there are still people like that out there.

Yea that's a true reward for your honest and integrity. I'd say pay it forward. My best pay it forward was being given a few pods of paint at a game when I ran out and then they did the prize draws and I won a bag. I decided as a way to pay it forward I distributed the extra paint I had just won to the renters that were running out that day. Funny thing is right after that I was approached by the field owner and he gave me an entire case for free just seeing that I distributed my prize so some kids could keep playing. I refilled my pods and distributed more paint including paying back the guy that had loaned me 2 pods by giving him back 3 in return. I just figure when good stuff happens and you can help out others you should. Just the way I was raised.

Thanks guys! The plan is to find an up and coming photographer and give it to them. I know it's not digital but I personally believe everyone should learn on film. It slows you down, makes you think. Like David Goldblatt said, The Camera is Not a Machine Gun.

QFT the camera is not a machine gun and I have the same belief film FORCES you to really think before you hit the shutter.

Great find. Glad to see having decency is still rewarded.

Had a similar experience. Signing in at local field and the lady behind the desk gives me four bags of paint when we had only paid for three. I realized the mistake and walked back to the shop and gave her the paint back. Went to chrony and my gun's reg blows a seal. After looking around for orings I finally give up. But I don't have enough dosh on me to rent a gun. So I sigh and walk back to the shop and ask if they do repairs. The same lady over hears me. turn out she is the field owner's wife. She rents me a gun for free and gets the guys to repair my gun free of charge. Karma is great
