Cable Modem Question

My cable modem is probably close to 15 years old. There have been so many changes in technology in those 15 years I was wondering if there would be any benefit to getting a newer modem. I did just receive letter from Comcast recommending I upgrade my modem to one that supports DOCSIS 3.0. Is this a necessary upgrade or are they just looking to sell stuff?

DOCSIS3 capable modems allow you to take advantage of higher speed packages. IE there is a theoretical limit to DOCSIS2.0 modems I think it's somewhere around the 16-18Mbps range then you start getting into DOCSIS3. So if they released say a 50Mbps package (which my local ISP offers) you need a DOCSIS3.0 modem to actually be able to get full speed.
