Cheap android tablets/ VOIP apps

Any recommendations? My friend has crappy cell coverage and no smart phone. So I was thinking a cheap wifi ready android tablet.

I see a bunch of off brand tablets for like 90 bux. I only really need the thing to do skype or google voice or some other VOIP app.

Cheap Android tablets are hit and miss. There's a reason they are cheap: usually they don't have Google apps support, or their cameras are horrible. Brands like Archos, Acer, and some of the older Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets are decent for the right price.

Another option: used smartphones. Look for one that has a bad ESN: the price will be a lot lower because it can't be used on a cell plan...but that won't matter for your friend. I see used Droid Xs on Craigslist for $40 all day long. Most of the common VOIP apps will work just fine on most Android phones built in the last couple years.

good point. Personally when it comes to tablets I'm very satisfied with my Kobo Arc 64GB running Jelly Bean

I think I will just give her my gen1 samsung tablet and order a galaxy 2.

Now I need to find a VOIP app to make calls to regular phones that doesn't cost money.

It sucks she has an old **** phone, suckier that there is no coverage in her house.

I'm just starting to look into this. My contract with Verizon expired so now I'm just month-to-month. Their coverage here (central Ohio) is vastly superior to most other carriers, so that makes it hard to leave. (That and my wife is not keen on having to go through a few extra steps to make a call.)
