| Passing through rider | Xbox modding
My boss is offering to sell me an Xbox for cheap, as his sons never touched it and have all moved away. My main interest in it would be for just a few games, and media playing from a network. How well does it do the last, and do you need to physically mod it to work? I can wait for a new PC or just keep using my laptop if you need to do drastic things. (hopefully nothing that includes linux either... my wife's eeepc already hurts my brain)

You talking about a 360 or the original Xbox? The original Xbox is a media machine, my friend has had one for years and with the latest software it will play any media format under the sun. A 360 would be easier to run off a network than the original Xbox. This is a great resource if you are looking into modding an Xbox. Scenyx Entertainment Community (Powered by Invision Power Board) |

There are plenty of ways to mod xboxes - how you go about it is dependent on the version of the xbox. Check the manufacture date - you should be able cross check that on the web to find the version. Mine is on the network - it runs a little OS - not linux. |

Crap! I just sold a wireless network adapter for original XBox a couple of months ago on eBay. I would've gifted it to you, as I got it at Goodwill for $4.99. The horror! But, the orig Xbox will handle most anything you throw at it, even with just their media player. But more with Linux.

Will it handle networked xvid and mp4 files?

Well, i have about 1tb here already, so no need to move anything around more than it has. Probably going to pass, and just build a nice PC later for media stuff. If the price is nice, I will put it on MCB before ebay.

There are multiple ways to mod it. You can do a soft-mod which doesn't require you opening the unit or you can do a hardware mod such as a mod chip. Once you mod it you can put Xbox Media Center on it: XBMC - Xbox Media Center This will allow you to stream anything from your computer to the TV. You can also control the xbox from other computers. There are plenty of other apps such as an internet browser too. I use mine all the time for streaming backup DVDs. Setting it up on the network is incredibly easy and doesn't require much effort. I'd go with the xbox over a normal computer just because of its size, remote, interface, and how easy it is to setup. |
