Well, my Xbox is now illiterate I suppose. When on the Xbox "Dashboard," on the bottom of the screen where it says the name of the disc in the xbox, mine just says unplayable disc. I tried multiple games and dvds, but with no success. I emailed Microsoft 2 weeks ago and asked them what the problem is. I have yet to receive a response. I do not think it is still under warranty, because i got it 2 years ago. Any of you intelligent and oh so kind gentlemen and or gentleladies know what is happening? |

Could be the lens is going, could be the laser is dying, could be the motor isnt working in the drive. Lots of possibilities. Sounds like a laser though if it wont read other DVDs. I get a read error every now and then, usually I just eject the disc, inspect it, blow off any dust and stick it back in without a problem.

There's a good chance your machine is no longer compatible with disc based media. Here'sa couple things to try: Open the tray and blow out the drive with some compressed computer cleaner. Strike it smartly on the top of the case above the drive(do it at your own risk because you may break something) to see if there is a part that will fall back into allignment and begin working again. Call XBOX and see if they will still let you buy an extended warranty. If so, send it in as soon as you get your paperwork. Force a RROD failure. I heard that people will wrap heavy towels or blankets around their 360 and run it until it gets the RROD. That's covered under a 3 year warranty and will most likely get you a new or refurbed box. Again, do this at your own risk and be aware that you could kill the box without the RROD or burn down your house. Do not leave it unattended while trying to cook it. Finally, what I would probably do is suck it up and buy an Arcade 360 and swap my HDD from the broken one. Then sell the broken one on ebay. Modders will buy them and replace the drive so if the box works good otherwise you may get a decent buck for it and have a new 360 for not much more than paying MS for a repair.

I traded away my 5 year old PS2 that was still going strong for my PS3. And lets not even talk about the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis that are still being played by the kids. Meanwhile I'm on my 3rd XBOX 360(disk read errors) since 6 weeks after launch. I love the heck out of the 360. It's a great system and has a great bunch of games but the hardware is ridiculously crappy.
