wireless router range

Hey guys,

I have my man cave in my garage, which is about 100' from my apartment. I would like to be able to use wireless internet in there? Which router has this kind of range? My 360 is out there too, so Id like to use the live service as well.

thanks

Jason

almost anything, however conditions matter, like concrete, linear position, cars, etc.

Wiring in the walls has a huge effect as well. If you have unshielded electrical cables between the router and you that can cause severe issues. Garage's tend to be bad for that kind of thing.

You could always build a directional antenna and reciever, if you have a clear path with line of sight.

I use an engenius booster on my laptop and get signals from all over. You can also use them on home PC's. I went from getting three signals up to six.

I picked up one of these for my garage, WRE54G, and it works slick.

My WiFi Access point is at the front of the house, the garage is out back, and the computer work space in the garage is in the back of the garage. Before I had this device I could just get connected but the signal was very bad. This device only requires power and is sitting at the front of the garage, about middle of the distance, and signal strength is excellent.

My WiFi access point is a LinkSys WRT54G mod'd with DD-WRT firmware and I had tried direction antennas and cranking up the wattage but the repeater was the ultimate solution. I would dare say the total distance was about 100 feet but many walls and interference to deal with to get there.

Move up to Wireless N and the range is really great. Just yesterday I was testing the range at one of my clients factory (concrete walls and all kinds of RF) I was able to go from the front of the factory to the back (200 feet or more) through two concrete walls. The signal never dropped. At the extreme end signal strength was poor but it kept a connection. Within 100 feet (one concrete wall) strength was excellent. To be quite honest, I was surprised at the reception. I didn't think it'd travel throughout the site.

I can get 300 yards.

'course I'm cheating, the access point is commercial grade and on the second story of a building, and has a big antenna.

Here's what I'd sugguest:
Air802.com LLC

Look around there or email them and ask.

Very heplful in getting my set up working.

I have 5 of their AP's on our small college campus in a mesh network. They work awesome.

I've got an IO Gear unit similar to the above. Easiest way to get internet to the computer upstairs.
