How hard is it to....

Change the mother board in a lap top? The new captain on my boat has a Dell paperweight. He wants to try and rebuild it and since I'm the goto guy on the boat ( a poor measure at best but you work with what you have) he wants me to help. So Is this a PIA or something that can be done. He's going to order a new one on Newegg, is there anything else it needs? What tools will I need? I have plenty of hammers, screw drivers, a torch (Mapp gas and Oxy Acet) and a few torx drivers. I was going to have him bring in all his installation disks and go from there. At worst it doesn't work and we won't improve that but who knows I might surprise him and get it working.
Thanks for any advice/help
Tug

mostly small screwdrivers, patience, and some gentle prying techniques, handling small connections without damaging them.
searchign online will produce MOST dell laptop disassembly guides by model

First off.... I thought you were the Captain?

Dammit was going to post a picture of Captain Morgan... but all I could find were his Morganettes

CommonGateway

DO you want to replace the board? 'Cause it will probably be a royal ass ache..... especially if out in the Atlantic in the fun waves they have there.

Other than that I really have nothing constructive... jsut keeping you on your toes.

It's very do-able.
As already mentioned before....small phillips screw drivers and lots of time/patience.

Dell docs are available online, take the time to download and print them BEFORE you get started.

Plan on making a full evening of it if you've never done it before.

An evening with lots of cursing and wondering what is holding the thing together.

HP's I found were among the easiest, dells somewhat harder, toshiba being the biggest PITA.

Lol you guys... I won't try this while underway, most likely. Another computer is available for internet help ( read looking at the Morganettes ) The skipper wants to try it so here we go. I do have infinite patience and quite dexterous hands for about an hour then it hammer time/torch time followed by a "float test". I'll keep you guys posted.
Thanks
Tug

E- I'm the Mate I do everything the Capt does when he's asleep but I can go get him if I get into trouble. He just has to deal with it.

nah maybe it was more like -

"All right Tug, I've never had a mate, you can try if you'd like. I'll
most likely kill you in the morning." Three years he
said that. "Good night Tug. Good work. Sleep
well. I'll most likely kill you in the morning." It
was a fine time for me. I was learning anything
anyone would teach me. And the captain
and I eventually became friends.
