will the average (L)user

Notice any big difference between a 320 gig drive running at 5400RPM vs. 7200RPM - with 4 gigs of ram and a dual core 2 chip (T5450 1.67ghz)

Applications that will be used - word, excel, outlook, e-mail, internet - pretty much standard stuff (oh and pictures of the grand kids) remote connectivity through gotomypc to our database.

Thanks

this day can't go fast enough

Only if they know they have a 5400 rather than a 7200 and are "smart" enough to understand the gobbledy-gook.

average user troubleshooting logic:
"ever since you flushed the toilet, my car won't start"

Formula:
Establish casually associated causality (that with any superior knowledge is unrelated), use derived blame to self-diagnose problem (real or imagined)

If it is the boot drive, they may notice the performance lag in loading programs and the OS.

Who makes a non laptop 5400 drive these days?

Tell the luser that you chose a 300,000 rpm drive and a 16 core cpu because you thought that their time and effort is just that important to the company.
