| Will Code For Schlitz | FireFox vs Opera ?
Ok, I used to be an Opera guy, switched over to FireFox...but now I'm starting to become slightly dis-enchanted with FireFox. The last round of updates seem to have introduced some odd little qwirks which I'm observing on multiple systems) Giving Opera another try for the first time in years. (Just not sure if I can live without a few key firefox add-ins!) Be brief, give legit reasons, which do you prefer and why? (let's just skip IE and Safari....for obvious reasons)

I just switched to Opera from Firefox. I really like the "speed dial" feature, but I wish there were a button to bring it up once you have opened a site. I do miss when Firefox would autocomplete words and logins.

I prefer Firefox. FF2 is slower than Opera but FF3 (currently in beta, but stable) is faster than Opera which eliminates Opera's main advantage over Firefox. Everything else Opera has you can get in Firefox with extensions, including speed dial. I will admit that Opera has more features included, but Firefox has so much more potential through the use of extensions. Extensions I use are: Adblock Plus (No more ads) ChatZilla (IRC Chat) CustomizeGoogle (no more google text adds among other things) Download Statusbar (Shows current downloads in bar at the bottom of the page) DownloadHelper (Downloads embedded mp3s and movies from places like youtube) DownThemAll (Let's me resume downloads, won't be necessary with FF3) Fast Dial (Speed Dial for Firefox) Google Toolbar (easy access to google account) Locationbar2 (improved functionality in the URL bar) McAfee Siteadvisor (Warns me about bad sites) PDF Download (Asks me what to do when opening a PDF, download, view in firefox, or open with external reader) Stop-or-Reload Button (Combines stop and reload into one button) URL Link (open text links with the right click menu) NoScript (better security, also makes flash stuff not load until I click it) UDToolbar & UD Centered Map (extensions for an online game I play)

I switched to Firefox after I caught the cache4 bug and couldn't get rid of it. I did like how fast Opera was and the fact that it never dropped me out of chat. Other then that I like both.

Hmmm....I didnt' even realize the beta for FF3 was out already (I used to keep up on this stuff...maybe I'll check that out) Especially since DownThemAll is one of those addons I can't live without !

Not sure if firefox does, since I don't use it much, but the best feature I like about opera is that when you close it, the web pages you were viewing are saved, and when I reopen they just pop right up. I usually have 10-15 tabs open at a time. All of them have things that I wan't to keep tabs on (pun!), but if I used firefox I would have to remember all the pages i was on. If firefox has this feature I guess I just don't kow about it, my wife uses firefox, and she doesn't have it, so I'm not sure if she's just missing out or something. To get a new speeddial, just click file, then new tab, and it should open as a speed dial (at least mine does). Only thing I dislike is that many pages don't run well (or at all) on opera, and I get tired of constantly telling opera to tell the web page that it is really IE or FF (another cool feature though). |
