Arrow Paging All Router/Gateway Gurus

So I go to set up port-forwarding on my router and come to find out the cable company clown that set it up changed the default password. Now I did a little research and supposedly I have to do a hard reset of the router. Trouble is I don't know what information (IP addresses, gateways, etc) I need to set up my internet once everything is cleared. Soo...I am asking exactly what information do I need and how do I obtain it?

Any help is appreciated.

-Dan

Is it a cable modem / router?

Either way, TYPICALLY, cable companies use DHCP, which means that after it's reset, the router will automatically look to it's WAN port (up to your cable modem) and get it's ip address, subnet, and dns servers dynamically. The Gateway will be the ip address of your cable modem.

ipconfig/all should give what is in use

dnstools.com and dnsstuff.com might have some easy web-based stuff

As for the PW, try ADMIN and then try leaving it blank, maybe your name. I don't think the cable clown would make it something difficult

Carefull though, that's going to show the info for your computer, not necessarily the router. Subnet will be different, and gateway will show your router as the gateway, not the cable modem. If if it's the same physical unit, it will have an internal gateway ipaddress that your computer sees, and an external gateway address for the cable-modem half of the device.

According to the cable company's site, it is a "modem/router/wireless router combo gateway."

Here are some pictures:

If the cable company set a password, then you have a right to know what it is. If you don't feel like asking them, you may find it here. if you can't find it there, then call them. You're the customer, dammit, and unless their ToS specifically prohibits enabling port forwarding on the router, you have every right to do it, and you need the password to do it.

I've tried every default username/password combo not only for my particular model, but others too. I've even spent hours exercising my leet hacker skills trying to crack the password. Names, numbers, words, everything. I could call the cable company but if the guy that set up the router changed the password, it would do no good. I don't remember who the buffoon was so I'm kind of up a creek.

If he changed the password, it's probably some standard password, so they should have it.

If not, then they should be able to give you all the settings that you'll need to put in after a reset.

Call them.
They should certainly give it to you. More than likely, it will have a seperate password for the cable-modem half of the device anyway.

Not that there's anything wrong w/ you wanting to setup port forwarding (other than the fact that you're probably going to open up a gaping security hole). But if you dont' want to get into that with them, you can always say that you have a right/concern to verify that their DEFAULT setup hasn't left inappropriate (read as "stupid") ports open into your personal network.
