Vistduh printing question.

Hi,

All right. My cousin hooked me up with a copy of Vista to try out. It is the Ultimate Edition 64 bit. My machine is more than capable of running the software. So far I have not come across any deal breakers until today.

My wife and trying everything out and so far I kind of like the look of Vista. It has a Jetson's feel to it. She requested that I make sure we can do photo uploads to web sites and such from the Explorer/ computer/ hard drive window. So I look into it and suddenly something was too good to be true. There was no way I could upload photos to a website from within Windows. I looked into where such access would be located and I came to the conclusion that online services would be found under the Print header.

Now the problem lies in the fact that I do not have an expanded menu for "Print" in the header. I have searched MS's Knowledge Base and Googled the problem. Everyone talks about the fact you can upload items through the print button but no one seems to know anything about why I would only have a Print button and no extended menu from there.

Right now I have three choices for OS. First is to stick with XP64 bit which is lack luster to say the least. I personally do not like some of functionally of the OS. Also finding support for it seems to be pulling teeth. For example, itunes does not support XP 64 but it will support Vista 64. Second choice would be using XP 32 bit. I will accept the fact that my system will not "see" all 4 gigs of RAM. However, I will have pretty much full function and support for the most part since just about everything imaginable is supported in XP 32. Third would be is to suck it up and deal with Vista 64 so my system can actually use what it has to run the OS. If I can find out why my copy of Vista is doing the print menu hiding thing, then Vista 64 would be in the lead for the OS. If not, XP32 it is. I will deal with 3.25GB of RAM and 32 bit OS. At least I know it will work.

Let me know what all you PC gurus think what the problem or where I can find a solution. Otherwise it will be another day of reformatting and re installing OS, software, other assorted drivers and devices.

Shag, I'm running Vista x64 with 4GB and I'm very happy with it overall. I don't quite understand the photo upload question, though. If you mean uploading photos to websites such as photobucket and flicker, etc., you'd do it via Internet Explorer as you would in Windows XP. I can't imagine a method of uploading photos to any website via the print function. Don't give up on Vista. Try and explain a bit more thoroughly what you're trying to accomplish (in detail) and the know-it-alls will help you out!

So far you are the closest to the solving the problem.

I upload my files to my web site from my explorer folder where images are stored. In XP, "Files and Folder Tasks" there is a selection called " Publish this folder (or file if selected) to the web" This is where I upload my images to my web site. In Vista it seems they moved this feature under print from what I gathered in the expanded menu of "Print". I did install the registry edit for the web site link up. Just I cannot figure out where it would be located in Vista for the upload.

Here is the cropped screenshot if what I am talking about.

Notice the lack of extended menu for the "Print". Everything I came across stated "Publishing to the web" type items would be located there. Unless these people are wrong (which is a possibility) where would this task be?

Harb: KISS due to the wife. The wife wants to be able to upload photos to the web site and to a place like Snapfish without a problem. She knows how to do these tasks very well. I do not want to toss in something new to screw her up.

Okay, so your photo site has you do a regedit to allow for an upload via the print dialog. Instead of how you did it in XP try:

Start/All Programs/Windows Photo Gallery/Print/Order prints...

Any luck?

Publish this folder I believe just made a quick FTP link in explorer. You can type the ftp address into the address bar and then make a shortcut to it, and then its a matter of copy paste or drag & drop.

I dont have vista re-installed yet, so I cant give you hands on there.

Cool I am not crazy! Well I should be committed but that is another story. I had to import the image galleries but that was no biggie. However that looks like it will work for uploads in my book. The wife's book is something different. I know she is use to the XP way of doing things. However I cannot see keeping 64 bit XP around due to it's limited support by companies. So i should get her approval before the final moves are made to Vista.

Thanks for the help.
