Wireless Router Possessed by Demons. Is Fire the only answer?

I recently purchased my wife a laptop (she was hogging the computer and a KP almost slipped through my fingers) and I can't get the wireless router to work. It's a Netgear one...it's white...has an antenna...some lights...

I follow the "Easy Steps" and get no where. Instructions call for me to unplug my cable modem, plug in the router in between it and the computer. Then to turn on the modem, wait for it to do it's thing, and then plug in the router.

Problem is, The modem does not sense the computer when the router is in line. And when I try to go through the software setup, it detects that I'm a fixed IP address provide by my ISP, but I'm not. I can get into the router configuration page just fine, so I know the PC's hooked up to it properly

As soon as I remove the router, the modem senses the PC and everything's great. I'm also not involving the laptop at all at this point, it's all hardwired to the desktop.

The instructions seem so easy!

Switch the cable to make sure the secondary cable is good.
Have you restarted the computer for it to take affect?

Did you accidentally hit the standby button on the modem? I hit mine all the time because it is huge and in the worst place.

Does the router have a designated WAN port that you need to plug the patch cable from the modem into ? Some do and some don't. If you had the model number of the router that may help too.

When you browse to the router's admin page from your computer, is there an option to view the "status" of the router's DHCP lease ? If so it'll probably have some buttons like "Release" and "Renew" you could try pressing those in that order and see if it grabs a valid IP address from your ISP.

Fire, not the only solution. Just the best one.
