They are not impervious but there does not exist the nearly endless gamut of virus/exploits that exits for the windows platform. I have yet to encounter a single instance of a mac virus in the wild post OSX and everything I've ever read on slashdot (unless there has been some kind of epidemic I'm not aware of while I wasn't looking) talks about proof of concept for a mac virus but not one that has been deployed. Most virus like things that I have seen for the mac only do silly non malicious things like flip the screen upside down. I would throw caution to the wind here. You don't really need it unless you're super duper super paranoid.

So what exactly is wrong with his "old" less than 2 year old computer? Is it the operating system? You can re-install Windows easily enough. You don't pay for Windows, you pay for a license to run Windows. As long as you're installing the same OS you can use the license key that's on the side of the computer (XP Home OEM and so forth).
