Vista incompatible with some routers?

Well, a few months ago I got a new desktop. Got a wireless router ( I had already had a wired router). The wired router is a D-link DI-604. Works fine with both computers. The Wireless in a Lynksys Wireless G. For some reason, whenever I run the wireless router, the desktop, which has vista, will keep dropping the connection. This happens even when the desktop is plugged into the port on the rear of it. When I go back to my old wired router, everything runs fine. Is it a compatibility issue? I follow the installation instructions, and the two laptops run just fine on the new router, it's only the desktop.

Any idea how I can fix this?

Yes it is.

We had a Belkin router that was less then a year old but was NOT Vista compatible. Had to go out and drop more money on a new router after buying Vista boxs just to stay online. Dang computers kept dropping connection on us.

This Happened regardless of being plugged into the router or going wireless. Save your self a head ache either plug into the router that works or go buy a newer router thats compatible.

Thanks Mstrtal, looks like I will be getting a new router then. I would much rather run wireless so my laptops are more portable. Right now I have the Dell inspiron (8200) dedicated to the TV as a media canter, and am using the Sony Viao as my portable laptop. Not really that portable when you have to haul a cat5 with it inside the house.

I'm kind of surprised that the router wouldn't be compatible with software, but given Microsoft, that sounds about right. Any ideas for one it will play nicely with?

I bought a Linksys Wireless-G the 2.4 gig 54MBP from best buy. Not the top of the line but then I had just bought 2 computers and a new printer/scanner at the time. Thats another pain in the arse our printer wasn't compatible. I payed under 75$ for the router though.

try updating the firmware on your Linksys, I having been running my Vista off the same model router through 3 walls for the last 6 months with no issues.

PS: better yet flash the whole thing and go with an open source firmware like Tomato or DD-Wrt

No.. some hardware manufacturers have been using legacy coding that has been around since the days of Windows 3.1, and when MS cleaned a bit of that up, all these issues arose.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Same problem with a lot of software vendors.

I've noticed that a lot of products from smaller, more customer service oriented software/hardware makers works REALLY well with Vista, because these companies are so small they can get items reworked quickly, which really helps them be the first to have a great product for Vista.

Take for example the bakcup program BackupAssist.

Small company, they rewrote and tested for Vista not long after it came out, and the program works beautifully!
