I guess you've been living under a rock They've been talking about this day for about 3 years because of fear of impact on the Stock price.

Gates is too out of touch anyway. Ozzie has a better understanding of the new wave of group ware that is all the fad

THey have probably been off his hands for years. He is a CEO, and makes decisions about the course of a company and who to put in charge of those functions.

You think he CEO of Ford is out slinging wrenches all day?

BTW, Gates retired as CEO in 2000, This "retirement" was the official last day as CSA "Chief Software Architect", the position that Ray Ozzie now fully owns. I believe he still sits on the board of directors.. but i'm not sure.
