Wireless security key

Alright, I need some help. I just got a new laptop in mail today, and Im trying to get the wireless connected. The computer I'm on now is plugged into the modem that is also wireless. I lost the piece of paper that the security key was written on and need it to use the wireless with my laptop.

Is there somewhere I can look on this computer or maybe right on the modem to find the security key? or do I have to call up my ISP and have them figure it out?

what brand/model is the modem? You might be able to get the IP address and log into the router portion and get the key. Have you ever hooked up anything wireless that you would have changed the key? If not call up your ISP and find out what the default key is as that might be what you're looking for.

Sometimes the key is the serial number on the bottom of the device. This is often the case with 2Wire gateways from AT&T.

Use the computer with the wired eithernet connection and log into the router. using your webbrowser type http://192.168.0.1, if there was no password set you should be able to look at the wireless settings from there.

You can find the manual for the specific router/gateway you have, it will tell you how to get into the settings. If all else fails, you can hard reset the router to blank it out and re-set all the setting.(careful with this as you will need your dsl user/pass as well.)
Welcome to Actiontec

thank you, this is what I was looking for. I knew there had to be a way

there wasnt a password so i set one now, and then just turned of the security key option. Where I live I dont have to worry about people stealing my wireless.

If there's a password to accest the settings, it's often Administrator, administrator, ADMINISTRATOR, Admin, admin, or ADMIN.

the wireless is all set up now (currently on my laptop w/ wireless) but Im having problems with flash. and adobe flash player wont download. could it be because Im on Vista 64-bit?

edit: I googled "Vista 64-bit flash player" and the first result was an easy fix to the flash problem
