Opinions...Market for and value of older PCs

Specs
P4 1.5 or 1.6
256-768mb ram PC-133
Intel MOBOs
Full tower cases
basic CD readers
NIC 10/100
basic sound
20-80gb HDD
15" crt Monitors
all in fabulous beige
AGP 32mb Video
windows 2k pro
some free software, like antivirus and openoffice.
white keyboard
white mechanical mouse.
NO MODEMS

A) Do you believe there would be local markets (no shipping, ebay, etc) for 20-40 systems as above on Craigslist and local cheap paper ads?

B) If you agree that there might be, what price would the system be in your opinion?
I am suggesting 35-50$ range?

I am thinking of trying to move 20+ systems as basic basic basic computers for the upcoming holiday season.

I know these are the bottom of the proverbial barrel. So be brutally honest.

You might want to try to find a place that would take them as a donation (Salvation Army, Boys & Girls CLub...) get a receipt and write it off at the end of the year. Those are decent pc's to surf the internet on, so someone should have some use for them.

Just my opinion.

Why is it considered luck when I put 5 balls on your face from a full run with my Ego, but skill when you shoot me in the back when I walk by the bush you've been hiding in for an hour with a pgp?

Just advertise them as email machines. I see plenty of them for sale at that price on ebay.

Just make sure set up and tech assistance is understood as extra.

And I might take one if it had some form of *nix on it.

If you want a 'junk' machine with a *nix flavor, I'll give you one.

Donation is another option yes, but I'm examining the cash options.

I have an old junk Pent. 2 sitting in a cabinet that either needs a DOD format and disposal or one of the 51 flavors of *nix.

I used to buy and sell used computers before the market dropped out many years back. I'm not as up on my pricing, but I would think you could easily get $50 for them with an OS installed on your local craigslist. Hell, if you were in my area, i'd buy one from you. Unfortunately, shipping kills the deal. Good luck!

Yes I agree there is not much value.
honestly 50$ is the high mark, I am really considering a $35-40 COMPLETE out the door, OS installed working point.

My uncle runs a computer recycling business here in Baltimore, Computer Donation Management, Inc..

They do all sorts of stuff with recycling like extracting parts and melting down for precious metals but one of their main focuses is taking donation machines which they then rebuild and donate to schools and other community organizations

You should see his business, in the past 5 years they have grown exponentially. I like going to his one of 6 warehouses and just look around. Think of a computer graveyard. Computer monitors piled 20 high and gaylords upon gaylords of mice, keyboards and other plastic crap with wires. It is a dream land for any tinker or computer nerd.

If you want to go that route, PM me, I can get you in touch with him. They may buy computers in batches like yours but I dont know.

Best bet would be to donate them you will get more value in a write off or donation credit. I went thought this at Addison Westly some departments wet through new computers every 6 months. The local schools in the town got the benefits of a publisher in town. Grade schools were where most of the computers went the first three years is where they got the most use. (K included)
