Computer Sound Issue

Have Windows 2000, and my sound has taken a dump on me. No idea how to fix it. The computer beeps whenever something along the lines of an instant message comes in. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks guys.

Try pulling the soundcard and putting it in a different PCI slot. If that doesnt work, re-install your drivers.

a) do you SEE the sound icon in your system tray?

b) go into control-panel >> sounds, and try to 'demo' one of the windows sounds. See if it 'appears' to play.

c) In control-panel >> sounds, there is a hardware tab. Typically not relevant for desktops, but on a lot of laptops it DOES matter which speaker layout you select.

d) What azzy said, although I'd try removing the drivers-rebooting-reinstalling the drivers first. If that fails, Azzy is right, switching PCI slots will usually cause Windows to recognize it as a "new" device and you can start over from there.

I'm not too computer savy, so thank you for walking me threw. I'm at work, when I get home hopefully tonight I'll get to it and let you know my findings. Thanks

That is if you do not have on board sound... do you know?

I don't know at the moment, I looked inside and the plug to where the sound plugs into to, is a small box looking thing

That sounds like an on-board sound card. (built right into the mother board)

a) Uninstall the drivers, reboot, and let windows "re-find" the hardware.
b) If you don't need 5.1 surround sound, you can pick up a decent pci sound card for $15 and slap it in there.

You can get a decent 5.1 card for 20 bucks as well.
