Try pulling the soundcard and putting it in a different PCI slot. If that doesnt work, re-install your drivers.

a) do you SEE the sound icon in your system tray? b) go into control-panel >> sounds, and try to 'demo' one of the windows sounds. See if it 'appears' to play. c) In control-panel >> sounds, there is a hardware tab. Typically not relevant for desktops, but on a lot of laptops it DOES matter which speaker layout you select. d) What azzy said, although I'd try removing the drivers-rebooting-reinstalling the drivers first. If that fails, Azzy is right, switching PCI slots will usually cause Windows to recognize it as a "new" device and you can start over from there.

a) Uninstall the drivers, reboot, and let windows "re-find" the hardware. b) If you don't need 5.1 surround sound, you can pick up a decent pci sound card for $15 and slap it in there.

You can get a decent 5.1 card for 20 bucks as well.
