I still advise looking into VLC.

It plays EVERYTHING... He'll it even plays partially constructed files that all other programs goes "pffft that's not video!!!" and if it can't play it it will fix the file so that it can!!!!

VLC!!!!

I also advise VLC. It is a must have on a mac, its free, and it replaces the need for windows media player for those pesky wmv files. Someone mentioned isquint for video conversion or transcoding. iquint was made by techspansion and its bigger brother visualhub for removing the windows taint from video files and putting them all in quicktime friendly format. However techspansion is no more and the author opensourced that project which is now in the form of videomonkey Video Monkey | Get Video Monkey at SourceForge.net
Also, another program recently threw its hat into the ring for transcoding known previously for its dvd ripping status, and that is handbrake. I've used it as a transcoder with great success.

correct not all files that end in .avi are the same as they have been () coded in different ways... ever heard of DivX? thats a codec (used to encode/decode) and there are many more both Video and Audio codecs...

Think of them as magic decoder rings!!!

Quick time doesn't come with all these codec's installed and has links to the major ones on its website.
