Mac army to the rescue please.

I am trying to install a component to my quicktime to allow me to play .avi format. Maybe i'm completely stupid, I dunno but I can't figure the install out to save my life.

Copied from the read file:
To install this component, just drag the File "XviD_Codec 1.0 alpha.component" into Library/QuickTime. The Library directory can be found either at your home directory (to install just for the actual user) or at the top-level of your startup volume (this needs an administrator account). DO NOT PUT IN: /System/Library/QuickTime.
It is possible that the QuickTime directory does not yet exists. In that case you can create it yourself. Pay attention to capital letters if you use a case sensitive file system (i.e. UFS).

Okay.
I cannot find Library/Quicktime anywhere on the mac. what the hell am i doing wrong? it has got to be something completely stupid simple, but christ for the life of me I can't figure it out. i don't understand what they mean by" It is possible that the QuickTime directory does not yet exists. In that case you can create it yourself. Pay attention to capital letters if you use a case sensitive file system (i.e. UFS)."
If I have to do this, how does one go about doing so?
i've tried searching from the finder window, and get no results. i've tried opening anything with a Q on it and nada. No Library/quicktime to be found, and Quicktime itself will not read the component when I drag it in there.
Any help would be mucho appreciated.

The "Library" is located on your hard drive at the base level with the application and system folders. ie the mac file path would be kinda like macintosh hard drive/library/quicktime

Are you using lepoard? Have you tried searching for it? (the Question mark on the top right of your screen)

Dont worry mate i have done MSCE (Microsoft certification) and still spent 5 hours trying to figure out how to network two macs only to have my girlfriend come home and do it in 1 min (not exactly a computer fiend)

you may have to do the old turn it off turn it on again trick... but it sounds like you have just "installed" the codec.

might i add if you are not against new soft ware look into VLC it will play just about anything you can find with out having to worry about updating codecs etc

Or track down iSquint (it converts almost any video format, other than RealMedia, to a Quicktime/iTunes friendly MP4 file).

For the record, AVI is not really a video format...it's a container file. The audio and video streams contained within an AVI file can be encoded in any number of formats with any number of codecs. If you know that the AVI file has a video stream encoded in divx or xvid, then the divx codec should allow Quicktime to display the video, but not necessarily the audio. You'd think the audio would be the easy part, since Quicktime itself plays MP3 and AAC files, but it seems to be picky. I've found that it doesn't seem to like the combination of divx & mp3, but divx and aac is OK. Most of the time. I just got in the habit of dropping any video I get into iSquint. I've had maybe 2 or 3 that wouldn't convert (other than the aforementioned RealMedia limitation).

Maybe this will help?

Play AVI DivX codec Movies on Quicktime in Mac OS X Leopard | Mac OS X Leopard & Tiger Dual Boot

I use quick time pro and the DIVX codec so i haven't run into any problem like this before.
