CD-ROM Not Registering>>>

Ok I was a Fool and Took out My Hard-Drive and Put in Another from a Garage Sale. Once I was Done Snooping, I put the Original Back in. Now the CD-ROMS Dont Work (Reader and Aftermarket Burner). Power is Getting to Them since When I push the Eject Button...They Open and Close.

I looked at the Hardware Settings and Both are Registered but Highlighted Red (Indicating a Problem). The Menu Prompts to Re-Initialize Drivers...Which I do...The Computer Finds Them Automatically and Then Tells Me to Restart The Computer. But Somehow The Computer Forgets the Driver initialization Command after Every Restart. Do I need to Track Down a Boot Disc to have inside or is there something I'm Doing Wrong.

Specs: Win ME, AMD 32
CD-ROM = Panasonic
CD-RW = Sony

BumP; Ok anyone have this problem with an ME, 2000, or XP machine? I have the drivers on all three Hard-Drive auto-access, USB, and CD and they're still not Registering? I'm not a programmer, but I know with this kind of redundancy it's a programming issue.

Help!!!

O_O

How did you survive this long using Windows ME?????? Holy Christ there must be some reward for that.

It's time for a new computer O_O

I say find the drivers online if you can, uninstall the old ones and install "updated" ones.

Its possible that the computer that a few things could have happened...

1. Since you changed the hardware config, automatically compensated within the BIOS on the motherboard. I would check your BIOS settings (you can usually access it when the computer boots up by hitting either f2 or del) to make sure the computer is "seeing" the drive.

2. You may also want to check the little jumper on the back by the 40 pin connector. If you have it hooked up solo, as in there is no other drive hooked up to the same 40 pin connector wires (most of them have that ability)

3. There are no bent wires on the connector.

4. The 4 wire connector (this is the power) is making a good connection.

5. Seriously.. ME? I agree with Ir0nExpress. That in itself is impressive!

Unplug both drives and restart the machine.
Remove both drives from the hardware profile
Restart w/o the drives again
Plug drives back in and reboot.

That trick used to work a lot on ME and 2K

It's most likley a jumper setting, as Grolli said. One should be master, one slave. REally doesn't matter which, but most people put the HD as master, CD as slave

ME? Seriously?? (ok, got that out of the way)

Check the BIOS first. Forget about the OS.
Make sure all the devices are registering correctly in the BIOS. Sounds like you have an older machine, in which case the bios may not be accurately re-identifying devices if they've moved on the ide channels.

boot to safe mode first then go into your hardware drive profile and delete all listings under your drives, sounds like you might have multiple instances of the driver installed in the profile and they are interfering with each other. Booting to safe mode will allow you to see all instances of installed drivers whether they are in actual use or not.

ME Seriously? That's Nothing I have an old 386--Dos ONLY, and the First IBM Aptiva recently converted to WIN95...all work great and run strong. (may think about replacing the power units to save on electricity--if compatable).

Why the Old Computers? Admit the best games came from that era and are only playable on those old formats: Dune, Dune 2000, Wolfenstien, X-wing, Commandos, Diablo, Tron, moonlander...and a grip of others I forgot to mention.

Oh, Yeah...I'll be checking into the diognosis' from you guys today...Thanks for all the advice!

old hardware isn't a big deal, just the Microsoft ME OS is a turd, your better off with 98 or 2000.
