Nail Polish Detent

So I know this is done routinely by many of you. For as long as I have been playing pump I've never actually done this my self. Spent years not pumping until I shot or pointing my barrel up. Other guns I own now have detents, wedgits, or freaks. I bought a Buzzard over the winter and I have a few questions on some of the finer points.

Do you prefer 1,2, or 3 spots of polish? I went with 3.

How long do you let the polish set before using?

How long before you have to add more/how long dose it last?

Are there better types or brands to use?

Do you have problems with breaking paint?

Any problems with accuracy?

What about using an epoxy?

How many of you gave up and sent your barrel in for freak boring or to PPS for wedgits? (I won't be freaking this barrel but am considering wedgits).

Any other useful advice would be great, thanks!

I did this with my phantom for a while and it seemed to work pretty well. I only used one drop at the top, my thinking was if it did anything other than hold the ball, it would give the ball back spin. Not sure it did, but it didn't send it in any funky directions either.

Ended up freak boring though. Got a kit with another marker, picked up a back, had two barrels...... could sell the back to get other stuff..... figured, why not?

Not sure on the epoxy but nail polish is easily removed and seemed to hold up just fine.

I use epoxy for a more permanent hold. Usually three small drops in a large bore barrel.
But you have to be sure of where you are putting the epoxy. I file it down to fit with a jewelers file. I apply with a q-tip.

Oh and I have sent in for wedgits before and still have a wedgited lapco bigshot. Works great.

In a emergency fix I have cut small stips of black tape and folded them over the tip of the barrel so half was inside and half outside. About an inch long in total or less.

How durable have you found this method? Any issues with the tape bunching up or coming loose?

I think I will probably just go with a ASP detent mod for my Phantom at some point in the future. Everyone who has got it seems to universally give that fix the thumbs up.

Should. When I sent my barrel out to be bored I cleaned the nail polish off before I sent it out. I had to use nail polish remover, couldn't flake it off, and for the most part it looked about the same as it did after I applied it. That was after a few outings, I didn't have to re-apply or anything in between outings. But like most anything it'll work until it don't.

I prefer to paint stripes rather than dots. I do this in several layers built up over the course of a couple days, to give them time to dry. That way I can keep checking to see if they're the right size and no bigger.

This particular one is an extra Kaner back I made for use with the local field paint, which was running ~.675 at the time.
The detents have lasted fine for years.

Thanks. It sounds like a very good semi permanent solution.
