Originally from New York, he was in between jobs and visiting his sister here in the San Fernando Valley.
He hated doctors and would never go for medical attention nor did he have any medical insurance.
He got terribly sick and was eventually forced to seek treatment so he walked into a clinic with cash in hand.
On the coffee table in the waiting room was an outdoor magazine write up on Gurnsey's Survival Games.
Soon after, he raised the money needed to start his field in 1985.

Here's another Rebline tidbit.
Steve was contemplating what to call his autococking nelson kit when he started building them.
Not wanting to mislead the buyer and at the same time not wanting to openly disclose the incorporation of a rubber band in it's mechanic's, he developed the name "Trojan".
Auto-"Cock"-ing + "Rubber"band = Trojan
Somewhere underneath his innovative genius mind lurked his perv sense of humor.

reb stuff

In the SI thread, DSA asked about when the Trojan came out.

If my memory serves me correct, Steve started development of the first prototypes in the spring/summer of "91.
I visited him at his factory where he showed me them.
Cashflow was already tight so he started taking discounted pre-orders to help finance bulk production.
Those were the first folks to get them in time for Christmas.
Version 1 had some glitches but he ironed them out for version 2 release just after the new year.
The sales just didnt take off like he had hoped.

I went by the sight of Steve's field "Southern Comfort" on Monday.
At least 90% of it is destroyed and looks like a moonscape after the Marek fire swept through.

It made me think of one of his game variations that you don't find much of anymore.
He called it "Short Huts".
Basically it was two hootches on opposite sides.
The catch was all players had to start INSIDE the hootch.
It made the game start more even and the scramble to exit was maddening because the doorway was one person's width.
You could fit a little over 15 in there so it's not practical for the bigger crowd games.
The fastest runners had dibs on the doorway.

I often wonder that DSA.
Steve never hid the fact beer was one of his 4 food groups.
He was alway a chain smoker the years I knew him.
He was also rail thin and prone to coughing fits.
I first met him 23 years ago but its been 15 years since Ive heard from him.
I do hope and pray he is well.
Im sure he would be proud to know he made his mark in the painball history books.
Its kinda our responsibility to keep his legacy and other pioneers' going.
Our future generations should know how it all began.
It's threads like this that pay tribute in some small way and I am really glad you started it in the first place.

ok, Im off the sermon podium....

Honestly, I would only do ONE thing to "Improve" the Reb... a better barrel - add the capacity for inserts and a thread the end to receive different tips.

The anti-roll out / anti double feed fixes I made are simple and work well, but matching paint would be great, as would some barrel tip options. Just my $.02
