Shimming a sterling

I know absolutely nothing about pumps just picked up a older sterling bronze. The velocity is low so do I put a shim behind the spring under the grip frame?

Behind the spring....

I set up the springs on my Sterling so that it shot at 300-310, and then added a reg to bring it down to field speeds....

I didn't notice any appreciable difference in mine. My goal was to keep the main spring as light as possible.

I want to keep it as light as possible also but seems a little harder to cock. The velocity is in the 230 to 270 range but not consistent at all.

Everything you need to know can be found here: Sterling Info Page

If a sterling seems hard to cock, I'd suspect you may have the wrong springs in it - both mainspring and valve spring. Check the pictures on the site above and see if they look right.
