Well since the shop is done

Well since the shop is done. Now getting the Sx3 mill back up.
Actually did that today. Had to get the power draw bar setup redone to get it to work properly. On the first attempt I messed up to parts. And had to re do them. ( yes i do screw up). So got those parts done and now it works flawless.

Heres my post from Cnc zone.

Well I added a power draw bar to my Sx3, Thanks to Hoss.

I made a few modifications to his design to adapt it to an x3. Since his was designed for a x2. But his setup is easy adapt.

The side frames where extended about 1.5 inch's and the top was made 2 inch's wider to straddle the head of an x3.

Now to work on the extension spacer for the head to get my work area where a want it. I know I could cut down the Ball screw to do it. But would rather have the little extra play room. Once i get this done i can work on getting the stationary tool changer setup.

Is it me or has anyone else notice the sx3 home x is the wrong way? Normally home should be in the - not the +. Might just be me.

I so don't know what you are talking about.... but if it's the portion made out of aluminum plate on top of the red machine... then it looks like you did a damn fine job!

Hmm None of the CNC machines at the collage had their Home coordinates in the +. All where -. In Fact the only Positive Home position native on any machine was on the Mills and that was the Z axis.
The rational as I understood it was to move the table and every thing out of your way for clean up and servicing when in the home position.

Whats funny about that. Is my Y axis homes - and X home pos.
I need to reference them both neg for the automatic tool changer.
As it reference the machine home and then finds the location of the tool from there.
If I have them pos it defeats the purpose of an automatic tool changer since the tool changer is on the neg side of X and will take longer for a tool change. Might as well do it manually at that point lol

Power draw bar. It's on top of my machine. It replaces my screw in draw bar that holds the collets in the machine for the tools. with a bar with Spring washers. Then a cam'ed ram and actuated are added. to push down on it . when activated it pushes down on the bar and compress the spring washer and release the tool. Making tool changes tool less.

I looked into a similar tooless changing system for my knee mill and it ran a tad bit expensive for me just yet. I think I will save up for the CNC machine. Nice work there, should make changing tools a lot easier!

I've looked in to tons of tool change systems. And by far the combination of power draw bar and a tormach tool kit was the best option. The power draw bar cost around $60 buxs out pocket. Had most of the metal for it here. The other components i ordered. But for $60 buxs i couldn't go wrong for trying.

The tormach system i Bought right after i got the x3 and have about $1000 in to that with extra holders and measuring setup. But well worth it.

Couldn't bring my self to spend $400 on a z-bot power draw bar. When the plans for this was already on the net.

You know it's funny because i was bitching a little the other day when i asked my boss to use the Mori Seiki duracenter we have at the shop for a couple projects i had this weekend and he told me to use the haas instead.. and then i started thinking of how lucky i was to even be able to use the shop machines on the weekend, and then i read this post and chuckled a little inside.. just thought i would share nice work btw, automatic changers are the best!
