As far as combos go. I say stay away. But that grizzly machine you speak of is made by Seig (same makes of my Super x3, Which i have 2 of now)

The lathe is there c6 lathe not a bad 9x20 lathe. Simalur to my jet 9x20
The mill on it is nothing more then an add on of the X2 mill column and head.
If you ever wanted to down the road to make them 2 separate machines you could. LittleMachineShop.com - tooling, parts, and accessories for bench top machinists has the mill table parts need.
One thing i would suggest is belt drive conversion for the mill
The head has plastic gears in there to drive the spindle. The slightest screw up and tear up the gears.

But in all it's a decent machine with possibilities.

On mine other than the vice only being three inches wide id does do a decent job. Since it has a rotating base I can't use a big fly head cutter or anything but it is stable using a 1" end mill plus with the 11 1/2 by 31 inch bed it'll cut anything i want paintball related or other wise. I can turn up to 6" material with the chuck it comes with and with the MT 3 spindle on the mill I can even use an R-8 collet set.

oh that is nicer than i would have thought.

G0619 6" x 21" Mill / Drill

well, I'm going with this when the time comes.. it really seems like a nice machine (reccomendation from altec) and it looks like it can do everything I will ever need to do.. tilting head, digital readout, 14in of movement.. sounds good to me

Thats a Super X3 from seig. Great machine For the price. I just picked one up from grizzly. It's my second. This one will stay manual for a while.

Dont forget to look for used equipment in your area.

I bought my mill for a bargain (and am selling it for a better bargain) My Enco mill on a stand is as big as a full size Bridgeport. With a new DRO and all tooling, I paid $1500 for it. That same mill new is almost that price.

wow, wish I lived near you hvac, I've checked all the "local" craigslist postings..
and it sounds like I might be getting an apprentichip with a master machinist that'd be pretty cool.

well yeah, if nothing turns up locally for a used highend mill I'll be going with that grizzly model, I aparently already have a little late that just needs some parts MILLED for it to work really small little thing, kinda cool though

Thats only if you have the room for a monster. Which most of us don't.

But as for 3 in ones. If you can, stay away from them. If it your only choice due to room. Knock your self out. Thats what i did. But i got it cnc ready when i got mine. But room was a big issue then. Now that 3 in 1 machine is getting reworked. Changing all the screws to ballscrew. and revamping the z. If it wasn't for the fact that if i ever wanted to play around with a cnc lathe this machine would have been gone long ago.
