Thumbs up Redux sear tripper modification - success

I notice the early Redux triggers had a sloped sear tripper.

The newer version has a replaceable steel pin.

(IronChef97's thread here: Duckslide, Redux, Duck comparison)

Would grinding a small slope on the cylindrical sear tripper smooth out the pull a bit? I've got it adjusted for no slack; just trying to lighten it up a bit.

you could always go the Gargoyle route and replace the steel pin with Delrin it might wear quicker but I bet it smooths out to a sweet spot and would be real nice.

just grind the cylinder. It would slope in the right direction of travel, so it shouldn't rotate.

That would also work but I kinda like the delrin idea just a bit slicker stuff easy to work with. I would hate to see you screw up your original parts.

Yea, when I first got my redux, the trigger pull was very difficult compared to my duck with it's sloped sear tripper. After a lot of play time and dry firing, the trigger pull is very nice now. You could also grind down the phantom sear, it's not a smooth slope, it looks more like a quarter of a circle. A carter sear has a very smooth slope.

Well, I took a risk and ground the sear tripper pin slightly.

m0ngo designed the trigger well so I wasn't too worried about damaging a unique Redux part with this mod: the steel pin seems to be an off-the-shelf part from a machine hardware store.

I used a cylindrical grinding stone to put a slightly concave contour to the back of the tripper where it would contact the hammer sear. It looks similar to the original design but on a smaller scale.

Qualitatively: the trigger pull has lightened up somewhat and gotten smoother.

Quantitatively: previously, when the trigger was pulled, it would move the bolt and slide back slightly because of the friction between sear tripper and hammer sear. It doesn't do this with the recontoured sear tripper.

You bet! The bit I used was just a grinding stone on a rotary tool.

One caveat: you will need a longer front trigger stop screw.

Without an extended front trigger stop screw, you'll have to pull farther, the distance determined by how much metal has been removed from the tripper. (about 1 or 2 millimeters)

The stock screw is slightly too short to take up all the slack, unless you like a two stage trigger. I'll post again when I determine an appropriate length. A 4-40 x 3/8 would probably work.

I wanted to clean it up a bit but my small Nicholson files just seemed to glide over the part.

The bevel is close enough to the base of the trigger there's a risk of damaging aluminum if worked on with a power tool while installed. I need some finer rotary bits.

EDIT: Cratex looks ideal for this. Off to Home Depot we go.
