This is probably a moot point but if you are worried about wear and tear on the hammer why not put delrin inserts in the slotted portions of the hammer? The weight of delrin wouldn't be that much and I imagine it would help with friction to get a smooth strike. I'd probably make the delrin slightly oversized say by a millimeter or half a millimeter.
