PB Weasel

After a LENGTHY USPS delay (one week overdue), PB Weasel has his extended barrel.

I got an email something like "IT ARRIVED! GOTTA GO ... RUNNING OUT DOOR TO SHOOT IT IN THE BACK YARD KTHXBYE!"

I think he's still out there shooting.

Very nice. Now he just needs to come inside and post some pics.

Also, to any Redux owner, is there any particular reason that the Redux barrel has a different type of o-ring groove on it? Like why is it separate from the threads, has its own raised groove type thing, etc. Hope that makes sense.

As far as I know both my "normal length" barrel and the extended barrel have the same O-ring groove features.

Oh and THANK YOU CJ lol.

Hrm. Good question!

I know the Freak insert sticks out the back of the barrel. Maybe the o-ring helps to align the barrel ... so having it set back makes it more effective at doing that.

Alignment of the barrel, maybe but doubtful. From what I have gathered it's main purpose is to assist is sealing the barrel thus making it more efficient by reducing blow by. Of course I could be wrong, I'm sure the Quackmaster himself could answer this lickidysplit!

Not sure why its there but from the one barrel I made it is very thin in that area, very very thin at the bottom of the groove.

You do realize you don't have to have it right? It's just one of those custom things that goes into creating a gun from a players stand point as opposed to a big box mfg. IMHO everything on the Redux is there for a reason because it was a player who created it.

If the Redux differs from the Loo or Carter duck it was because of his perspective on what was and was not working on previous versions. From the numerous convesations I have had with Steve he made it clear that the Redux does not offer some of the milling optiions that Earon offers out of respect. In essence it's a working man's gun.

Steve included things he always thought would be cool while doing his best to remain dedicated to SC rules. He could have ramped the feed, shortened the threads on the c02 knob, created a direct feed, or even done bore drop but that all goes against the SC grain. In the end he melded yesterday's most sought after marker with today's technology and presented the public with options found on no other duck on the planet.

Regarding the o-ring: I don't see it having a "sealing" function vis-a-vis CO2. The Freak insert is VERY securely wedged between the barrel and the breech. I may be wrong but I suspect it would have negligible effect compared to the very well designed Freak-to-breech interface.

As for the design in general, one of the if not THE primary design decision was:
  • the requirement to not have to weld parts together
The whole gun is made on a mill/lathe and bolted together.

One example is the feed tube/body interface: on a Carter or Loo Duck, it's welded in place. On a Redux, it's a series of tapped and bolted parts.

I have seen a duck or two that was glued not welded, very strange for a $1000.00 plus marker wouldn't you argree? I am sure it's some kind of special glue but I am no expert in that field. From what Steve shared, the reason was to make the gun field strippable without having to remove the feed gate. It also gives the user access and removal to the feed tube for easy cleaning. I guess you can't do that with the other configuration.

Personally I like both looks, one is sleek and low profile the other has a beefy man gun look to me. The only thing I would change given the option would be made to the feed tube adaptor. It appears as if it is counter sunk just a hair too deep. Therefore if you overfill the feed tube the balls won't drop. I am not are if that happens to the other feed tube set up. Maybe DM can chime in on the subject.

BTW we are back to jousting CJ yeehaw!
