Return springs: why you should use one

A cautionary tale from a former Redux user...

While removing the return spring lightens the pump stroke a bit, it has a serious drawback. Without a pump spring, the weight of the slide has a tendency to move the bolt back on its own.

This tended to bite me when I was running up field off the start whistle with the slide flopping around leading to crushed paint, double feeds or unloaded gun.

All this to say: use a return spring. (same applies to most Nelson guns)
An alternative would be leave the gun uncocked until you were ready to fire; the main hammer spring would then keep the bolt forward as it isn't latched to the hammer via the sear.

I tried running my Duck without the return spring. It was full of fail.

I agree with CJ 100%. There's a reason they are there. Leave 'em.

Agreed. Sometimes, if it's a nelson with a delrin handle or something else light, you can get away with using the oring on the bolt to hold it forward. Mostly I have only had luck doing this on a Phantom with CCI undercocking kit or an actual Nelspot

I haven't used one from day two. But then again I don't hold my pistola like Han Solo posing for a movie shot either. It's always pointed down or on target. Although I like it on when the marker is not gassed up so it cocks itself I found it to make the pump stroke a little to stiff for my liking.

I removed the spring on my ghost to lighten the stroke, and never looked back - with the detent i can run with the barrel down and not worry about that kind of fail, or i keep my hand on the pump handle and there's no problem either.

Return spring FTW! Especially on my ducks, and superstockers, and well everything I own!

I run No return spring on my redux . It makes the pump stroke much nicer. I never run around with a ball chambered so i dont have any
issue wth the pump flopping around.

Stiffer pump strokes make me shoot slower/less paint. So they have never bugged me.
