Just curious if anyone has ever tried using a fluted hammer in their 'Dux or Duck... now that I've got a PT that gets me into a "playable" velocity range (still not sure why I could never seem to get my velocity over 260 - and that was w/ the heaviest spring combo and the tpc barely threaded), I figure I could go ahead and do some tuning for efficiency. I only ever put my SSC duel fluted hammer in the dux once, and then just decided that in order to get a usable velocity it just didn't have enough mass Just figured I'd see what anyone else has done... if I recall correclty DM6Rocker previously recommended to me via PM a Green main, Yellow valve (?), fluted hammer combo... but I can't seem to find that PM (I might have just dreamt it, LOL...) currently I'm using a Red main, Yellow valve, stock hammer, modified Kingman Hammer PT, w/ the TPC in about 3 full turns - shooting around 290fps, and getting 27 shots over 250fps on a 12gram Thanks guys!

With the fluted hammer I used a green valve with red mainspring from an authentic nelson spring kit . I was able to shoot around270 to 280 fps and got a good 35 shots off one 12 gram in the summer . It felt like the hammer was grinding inside the redux snub every time I pumped it so i decided to take it out and keep the spring combo the same . I only lost a few shots but I was able to back out the tpc adjustment quite a bit and made the pump stroke smoother . The lightened hammer was ok but I just prefer the stock hammer weight . With the setup you are using that sounds like a good amount of shots .

Just cracked my Dux open for ya, Short. Red main, red valve, fluted hammer, and standard powertube. Never had to re-chrono it, and I get at least 35 at 270-280, but it dies quick. I always change out at 30 regardless. Only thing I need to do before starting is size my paint, usually with a small underbore. It still gets a good amount now with the colder weather, but I never actually stopped and counted while being shot at lol

LOL... 35 shots between 270-280 would be GREAT! Thats about what I get shooting my Drop out phantom w/ the only mod being a freak insert... that's my goal for efficiency... thanks a ton bro

Yeah, I was using a lightened hammer in mine. The fluting isn't relevant other than being a result of material being removed to lighten the hammer. I posted a thread somewhere in here detailing my results. (short answer: less hammer bounce, more efficiency) |

Actually they were fluted to reduce friction which hindered the smoothness of the pump stroke. The weight loss was just a side effect. That is why you used to see ads claiming "space age" Teflon coating etc. It would be nice for Mr. Thompson to fill us in on all that lost knowledge. I think some folks jumped on the lighter is better bandwagon just because fluting reduced weight. Line SI on the other hand did their home work and incorporated both which resulted in a very light, coated hammer and aluminum and delrin bolt combo which was the best of both worlds. Good thing the Redux snub is SS or you would be stuck with a grooved snub for life because once you flute an aluminum snub your stuck with it. | |

The following was taken from the Lapco Paintball website. Looks like Mr. Thompson was as fanatical as a few MCBer's I know and then some. It's a good read.......again 20yrs later. Quote:

Wow! Great read Eric! Thanks bro... since I only started playing in 2001, I love reading articles from the sports earlier days... from back when my dad was telling me "war stories" from the paintball field! LOL And the part about the 30gr fluted hammer getting 50 shots of a 12ie is amazing! Almost sounds like a fish tail to me! Thanks again bro for the read
