VKC Duck #51 tuning thread

I caught some decent weather and time today and took my Dux to the back deck to get some numbers on how she's shooting. I have a set of Thunder Pig Nelson springs and started with what I've been using the last few games, a red main and the stock silver valve spring. Temp outside was 52 degrees and paint was Draxxus field grade that mic'd at .683 on average. I was using a .679 insert seemed to produce a nice tight fit. Time between shots was 15 seconds. TPC was in one and a half full turns. I am also using a gas diffuser in the valve that I built.

Here is the first string:
1) 263
2) 259
3) 260
4) 264
5) 254
6) 256
7) 252
8) 250
9) 262
10) 247
11) 250
12) 244
13) 235

37) 199
38) 176
39) 156
40) 144
41) 142
Vented when I pumped

For the second string I changed the valve spring for a red one and left the red main. Everything else remained constant. I didn't touch the TPC either.

Here are those numbers:
1) 254
2) 258
3) 251
4) 238
5) 235
6) 232

19) 226
20) 225
21) 224
22) 230
23) 228
24) 213 - this one was notable tighter to load.
25) 216
26) 228
27) 220
28) 214
29) 207
30) 201

42) 135
43) 117
44) 000
Barely made it out of the barrel.

I'm pleased with the results so far. I'm going to dump this into excel and do some more analysis.

Here is a chart I whipped up in Excel. I thought the consistency of the second string was much better, though there were a few outliers. I did notice that I got some wider velocity swings around shots 24-30 on the second string and these balls came from the bottom of the pod I was using. Could be they were slightly out of round.

Some notes from the Excel:

Red/Silver combo:
Shots = 41
Total Average FPS = 233.8
Total FPS Range = 122.0

Average FPS of 30 shots = 247.1
Standard deviation of 30 shots = 8.8
FPS range of 30 shots = 30.0

Red/Red combo:
Shots = 43
Total Average FPS = 213.7
Total FPS Range = 141

Average FPS of 30 shots = 228.3
Standard deviation of 30 shots = 12.1
FPS range of 30 shots = 57.0

While the second string felt more consistent, especially with what I saw from shots 15-21, the standard deviation was better on the first string over all. I will be picking up some high end paint to try this with that will net better results in consistency for sure. I've been trying to burn through the case I bought a few months ago and have been pumping my way through it for some time!

I went with the stronger valve first to see if I could increase the consistency and squeeze out more shots by lowering the dwell. I think it may be too strong though and will try out the green valve spring (lt. medium) next. From what I've read the blue in my kit is a medium strength which should be the same as the stock silver CCI spring the duck shipped with. The overall consistency and shot count has been greatly improved from using the diffuser in the valve and I no longer see a cloud of CO2 or any snow blowing out of the barrel with a fresh 12g.

Great job, thank you for reviving the Redux Section. I would be interested to see you start at 300fps for one test and 280fps for another

I had a lot of success with thunderpig green main and yellow valve. Think I got 30 shots above 270 with that combo iirc.

Nice! Yeah I went strong first but I think weaker may yield better results. I'm not positive but it seems logical that the weaker setup may be easier on the internals, particularly the powertube.

Here is the excel:

Here is the breakdown:

Red/Green combo:
Shots = 35
Total Average FPS = 234.5
Total FPS Range = 147

Average FPS of 30 shots = 246.5
Standard deviation of 30 shots = 19.9
FPS range of 30 shots = 91.0

Blue/Yellow combo:
Shots=45
Total Average FPS = 216.3
Total FPS Range = 161

Average FPS of 30 shots = 234.5
Standard deviation of 30 shots = 13.9
FPS range of 30 shots = 54

Up next is the Green/Yellow combo and something else. I need to look over these numbers for a bit to see what other combos to try. Suggestions are welcome!
